Post Coma - First 24 Hours

It has been a long day/night.  I just woke up and washed up after a short rest this morning back at the hotel. Called to the bullpen around 7:00 am when my mom came to the hospital to relieve me.  Elana was awoken from the coma and extubated about noon time yesterday.  She was responding to commands and definitely recognized everyone around including the names of friends and family.  The first smile came to her face when I mentioned Jesse's name.  However, she is still suffering from the Ketamine hallucinations and the effects of withdrawal of the opioids (Vicadin, Morphine & Oxycontin) she was taking before the Coma.  She is very restless and get can't get comfortable.  We still have to keep her arms and legs tied down to prevent her from hurting herself or damaging the central line. On top of that her throat is incredible sore from all the tubes during the week so she can't really talk except for a few raspy whispered words that after about thirty times I can barely understand and really don't make any sense.

I am hopeful that she will do a little better today.  Time to go back to the hospital.  Will try to give another update tomorrow.  Onward.......

  6. So glad to read this most recent update. I kept looking at my email expecting something posted there or a call from your mom. I hope you got the opportunity to read my email to you about "Jesse happenings" so you can tell Elana all the funny things he says. You two have produced a magnificent child and seeing how you are handling this nightmarish journey & the strength that Elana has displayed it is evident where he gets it from.
Thank you for being the best care taker possible of my precious daughter, Elana. I am with you there heart and soul!
    Love,
    Oma

  8. Please tell E that Hil-Bill said hi and I love her.
Thank you for your blog. You are so strong..think about you all the time.

I talked to Jesse today (well every day), but today I asked him, "Where does Oma live?" He said "Rhode Island." "Where does Auntie live?" He said,"New York. " Where does Jesse live? "In Florida." "Where is Mommy and Daddy? "In Mexico." I can not believe how smart my little munchkin is.

Did you here what he said to your dad? Larry slept over your house the other night and after he came back from temple, he took a nap. Jesse went into the room and played with him for a little bit and went to leave. When he left he said, "Poppy (spelling?) , "Would you like the door closed or left open?" Can you believe he asked that? Some adults aren't even that polite!!!!

  17. Lance & Elana -
As a friend of a friend, I have been following your amazing journey this week and praying for all of you. It is evident through this blog that you have an incredible group of friends and family supporting you, but please know that there are also perfect strangers who are lifting you up in prayer as well. I feel very sure that this week of treatment will be something that the two of you look back on as a kind of miraculous glimpse of humanity. I wish you well as you bring Elana home and begin to remember what life was before this awful disease.
