Infusion Day

I was feeling a little over-blogged that last day or so, not to mention there had not been much new news to report.  In addition, I found some random live tv streaming video site on the internet and spent the last two nights watching the NBA all-star game events.  It was definitely worth all the viruses and spam that I probably infected my computer with in order to download the required software.  Especially, considering Dwyane Wade won the MVP.  I'm not worried, one trip to the Apple store and all my problems will go away.

As I write this, Elana is about 20 minutes into a ketamine infusion treatment.  This infusion will take about 2 hours and will wipe Elana out for most of the day.  This is standard protocol for Coma patients.  Usually, the day before the patient is released from the hospital, Dr. Cantu will administer a booster infusion to help remind the brain that it needs to shut off the pain alarm.   It is not enough to injure the RSD, we must keep beating on it until it is in full submission.  At least that is the hope.  Elana will probably have another 6 or so infusions over the next 3 months in order to keep the RSD at bay.

We are so close to leaving I can smell it.  Tomorrow morning, Elana will be released from the hospital and after a night of rest in the hotel, we will fly back home on Wednesday.  For all the right reasons, I am looking to retire my blogging jersey very soon.

  2. PLEASE keep posting! I know you don't know me, but I've just been so MESMERIZED by Elana's story. I feel this blog (and sharing your trials through the enduring past few years in dealing with this) has *really* opened my eyes to a disease I didn't know existed. If someone told me they had RSD and was "in pain," I likely would have discounted it prior to reading Elana's story.

Now, however, I realize this is a VERY difficult issue, and the FDA needs to allow research to go forward in finding a cure/treatment. (Making the comas more affordable to those who need it!)

Also, I'm sure you've been told this, but on the show "House," they put him into a ketamine coma (in the STATES, which I now know would never happen) to eliminate his leg pain. Interesting that I saw that episode many years ago and made the connection to it after hearing Elana's story.

Anyway, please keep those of us who don't know you IRL posted on how her recovery is coming. I have her fullest recovery in my nightly positive meditations.

Good luck to both of you!

  9. Please keep us posted. I can imagine the blogging about Elana can be laborious at times, but know there are many of us reading every night in the hopes to read about a good day that Elana has had and to know exactly what next step we should be praying for. I think of you and Elana and your family often and pray that this is behind you all soon. I look forward to the day when I can follow Elana's happy and healthy life on Facebook instead of this blog!

Peace and Love, Deana (high school friend of Hilary)

  10. How did the booster go yesterday? Good, I hope.

You must be very excited about being able to go home again. To hug your little guy and catch up with family and friends. Although the flight was difficult for me, I was so happy to be going home to my children as well.

May you have a safe trip home and I look forward to any more updates on how you are all doing. Give me a call when you get a chance.
